Mali garnet is a rare variety of the gemstone garnet only found in Mali, West Africa. This unique type of garnet comes in a few colors but its most renowned hue is a yellow chrome-green that tends to sparkle like a Diamond when faceted.
Most garnets are a mixture of two species. Mali garnet is a mixture of grossular (also called grossularite) and andradite. This combination led to the nickname “grandite.”
Mail garnets are known for having uncommon colors, a high refractive index and the highest dispersion of any garnet species making specimens like this one extremely desirable and sought-after. Especially with the type II clarity these portray.
