On offer is a fine example of a large Ragastens silver plated 'Penca De Balangandan' Brazilian slave charm amulet chatelaine with 10 charms. Impressed marks on the reverse; Ragastens and Prata 90. Measuring just over 12" in length from the suspension chain top to the finger tip of the Figa charm, and approximately 6.5" in width. In extremely good condition. The purpose and history of these African slave charms is well documented, however, the histories of the very few known companies that made them is not. Often these are listed as vintage and sometimes antique. Without any substantial historic documentary evidence about the manufacturers it is difficult to ascertain which definition is correct. It seems to us that these are most likely to be genuine pieces of African Latin American history.
