The "Frozen Charlotte" story is a 19th-century cautionary folk tale, popularized by the ballad "Young Charlotte," about a vain young woman named Charlotte who froze to death on a cold winter night because she refused to wear a blanket to a New Year's Eve ball, wanting to show off her fine gown instead. The story's popularity led to the naming of German-made porcelain dolls, also called "Frozen Charlottes," that were sold in the U.S. in the mid-1800s. These pale, often nude dolls resembled the frozen figure in the ballad and became popular, especially among children, who sometimes placed them in toy coffins.
